Curricular Development in Statistics Education

In June, Maxine Pfannkuch attended the IASE Roundtable Conference in Sweden on Curricular Development in Statistics Education.

10th Internation Congress on Mathematics Education in Denmark

Maxine Pfannkuch gave a presentation at the 10th International Congress on Mathematics Education in Denmark.

International Biometrics Conference (IBC) / Australian Statistical Conference

Brian McArdle, Rachel Fewster, Alan Lee, Russell Millar, Steven Miller, Alastair Scott, David Scott, Wayne Steward, Chris Triggs.

A contingent of nine attended the joint International Biometrics Conference / Australian Statistical Conference in Cairns in July, delivering a total of eight talks, including three invited talks.

Survival Analysis in Medicine and Econometrics

Renate Meyer presented a paper at the workshop on Survival analysis in Medicine and Econometrics

Maximum Entropy conference

Richard Umstaetter presented work on astrophysical data at the Maximum Entropy conference in Munich.

Rich Ford's interview with Radio New Zealand

David Steemson interviewed Rich Ford for the Auckland Issues programme for Radio New Zealand on the 27th and 28th of July.

Workshop on Statistical Methods for Missing Data

Alan Lee, Alastair Scott, and Chris Wild were invited speakers at Field's Institute Workshop on Statistical Methods for Missing Data in Toronto. James Reilly also spoke at the meeting.

North American Joint Statistical Meeting (JSM)

Alan Lee, James Riley, Alastair Scott, Chris Wild attended the annual North American Joint Statistical Meeting, also in Toronto, by which time they had found their data.

UseR, Vienna

Paul Murrell gave the opening keynote talk at the aptly named UseR! conference in Vienna, the first international conference for R Users.

Paul was also selected as Chair-Elect for the ASA Statistical Graphics Section in 2005, and he will be Chair in 2006.

Workshop on Spatial Stochastic Modelling

Ilze Ziedins was an invited participant at the Workshop on Spatial Stochastic Modelling, with Applications to Communications, in Edinburgh.

Centre for Ecological Modelling

James Russel visited the Centre for Ecological Modelling in St Andrews.

Estimating Animal Abundance

James Russell attended a workshop on Estimating Animal Abundance in Christchurch.

ISI Special Conference

Chris Wild has now proceeded to Korea, where he is participating in an invited panel session at the ISI Special Conference on The Vital Role of Statistical Science in Assuring National Prosperity.

Japan Statistical Society

Chris Wild invited talk at the Japan Statistical Society.

Royal Statistical Society (RSS) 2004 Conference Manchester

Chris Wild travels to Manchester to give the prestigious opening plenary talk at RSS 2004. Chris's talk is entitled Statistics education, and connecting practice with research.

International Conference on Bioinformatics (INCOB)

Mik Black attended INCOB in Auckland from September 5 to 8.

Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association

Rich Ford is presenting at the Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association meeting entitled: Changes in Land Uses : Consequences on Estuaries and Coastal Zones in France on Sept the 15th. Talking on the consequences of rainfall for estuarine faunal assemblages.

Leila Boyle voted Councillor

Voting results for local body elections finished on Saturday 9 October. Leila Boyle is one of four councillors who received seats in the Tamaki-Maungakiekie ward.

David Scott in Germany

David Scott presented a paper at the workshop on the Design and Analysis of Infectious Disease Studies at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, Germany. He also gave talks at Dortmund University and Ludwig-Maximillians University in Munich.

Marti Anderson's Marsden Fund Update

2004 Netguide Web Awards

Rachel and Regan Cunliffe won the best-youth-site category in the 2004 Netguide Web Awards for their Idolblog site, www.idolblog.com.

Another successful professional development day was hosted by the department on behalf of the Auckland Mathematical Association for Level 3 Statistics & Modelling secondary school teachers. About 125 teachers attended the day at the Tamaki Campus.

Queueing Theory

Ilze Ziedins was an invited participant to a month-long programme on Queueing Theory at The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Stockholm, in November.

Rachel Fewster's paintball pitted the staff against the students. Staff won, 24-14, 20-18, and captured the flag in the third round to complete their rout.

BioInfo Summer Conf

Mik Black attended the Bio Info Summer Conference at ANU in December 6 to 10 in Canberra, Australia.
