Strong computing skills are an absolutely essential requirement for any modern statistician who works in industry or academia. The aim of STATS 779 is to provide students with an introduction to essential computing tools that they will find useful, either for future studies, or for the workplace. The course is taught in a computer laboratory with an emphasis on involvement rather than passive lecture listening. We give an introduction to: Microsoft Excel; typesetting in LaTeX and Microsoft Word; graphics, programming; and text processing in R; database skills in Microsoft Access and MySQL; and symbolic computation. Every class has a workshop component where students get hands on training in the topics being discussed.

There will be no final exam but the last lecture of the semester will be a test.
