Course planning and enrolment

While you don't need to have your entire degree mapped out before you start, it's good to have an overall plan. Read the information below or contact our staff for advice.

Course planning

Statistical skills support an extraordinarily wide range of careers. To help you in your career planning, we have commissioned a report to find out whether and how employers value statistical skills:

General information about enrolment

Whether you are a new or a returning student, you should discuss your choice of programme and courses with the appropriate departmental Academic Adviser or Graduate Officer.

Admission and enrolment are two different processes. You first apply for and get admission to the University. Then you enrol in the programme and course of your choice, in consultation with the Academic Adviser or Graduate Officer.

The University of Auckland will be open for enrolment from November to the end of February. You are welcome at any time during normal office hours to contact the advisers mentioned above for academic and enrolment advice or assistance in completing your enrolment.

BSc/Ba(Hons) enrolment

All BSc/BA(Hons) programmes in Statistics must be approved by the Graduate Officer for Masters and Honours. Ideally, you will map out your course in consultation with the Graduate Officer well before the official enrolment dates. Please note that enrolment must be done in person.

PGDipSci enrolment

PhD enrolment

Graduates of New Zealand universities admitted to our PhD programme normally have a Masters or Bachelors Honours degree, awarded with First Class Honours or Second Class, Division One Honours. For students from other countries, we look for evidence of similar ability. A Masters degree is required in most cases.

We normally require a background in statistics and mathematics. We are also happy to consider other applicants with a background suited to any particular part of our research programme, for example good mathematicians with less statistical knowledge, or good computer scientists with interests in statistical computing issues.

Some of our research students do PhDs in cross-disciplinary areas involving another subject (e.g. a medical discipline) and Applied Statistics. These students typically have two supervisors, one from Statistics and one from another department of the University.
