Available funded PhD research project
Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship to be held in the Department of Statistics at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. The studentship is supported by the Marsden Fund Council from Government funding, administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand
The closing date is 5 June 2012.
Project Title: Control of equilibria in stochastic networks with selfish routing.
Project Supervisors: Associate Professor Ilze Ziedins, Dr Mark Holmes.
Project Description: In many networks, individuals travelling through the network make their own routing decisions without regard for others (for instance, in traffic and communications networks). Networks with selfish routing can experience very poor performance with long delays and queues, and delays may even increase when extra capacity is added to the system (for instance, by adding additional routes, or more capacity or bandwidth on already existing routes). This project will investigate the performance and control of queueing networks where individuals choose their own route given some knowledge of the current state of the network; and the extent to which a simple mechanism, such as giving individuals more information about the state of the system, can control poor behaviour.
A good background in applied probability and mathematics, with some scientific programming skills, is desirable.
The stipend is NZ$25,000 per annum (tax free) for three years plus tuition.
Students may commence at any time before December 2012.
