Department of Statistics

Planning a PhD

You can enter the Postgraduate Programme after completing a Bachelors degree with a major in Statistics. Bridging options are available for students who do not meet this requirement.

The PhD in Statistics is our highest qualification, it trains students to undertake research in statistics and its more advanced applications. Most students embark on a PhD after a masters degree but sufficiently strong students can do so after completing an Honours degree. It takes about three to four years of study to complete a PhD degree, including the production of a substantive thesis. Candidates are expected to have a strong background including statistical theory and computation skills, that is, equivalent to the courses STATS 730 and STATS 782 at The University of Auckland.

Admission to a PhD in this department is competitive. We encourage applications from candidates with high first-class Honours or Masters degrees in Statistics or a closely related discipline, and/or demonstrated research experience. Candidates with high second-class degrees may be considered if they have strong endorsement from a prospective supervisor.
