Statistics Canada's portal to resources to educate the public in Statistics (in English) and the same portal (in French) gives an overview of the resources available. This website has a section for teachers, another for students, a kid’s zone, Postsecondary Education and a link to CensusAtSchool and to a glossary of statistics called “Power from Data.”

Websites describing workshops open to the public for a fee

The Workshops web page (English version) and The Workshops web page (French version) describe the numerous workshops that run from 1 day to 5 days. The workshops most relevant to statistical literacy are Introduction to Basic Statistics, Introduction to Basic Sampling, Making Sense of Survey Data, Statistics for Business Planning, Survey Sampling & Questionnaire Design, Surveys from Start to Finish, and Turning Statistics Into Stories. Statistics: Power from Data! (English version) (or les Statistiques: le pouvoir des données!) (French version) ia a free electronic resource, in modular format, designed to help teachers and secondary students better understand statistics and to enhance their skills in using them. The 13 chapters contain examples, case studies and exercises to help readers apply what they learn to everyday situation. Note: A similar website called Statistics: A Powerful Edge! is available from Australian Bureau of Statistics .

It offers an enormous warehouse of reliable and timely statistics about Canada and its ever-changing people. E-STAT also offers online mapping and graphing functions.

Getting Ready for the Census: 2001 Teacher’s Kit

All activities are classroom-ready and have been classroom tested to meet curriculum requirements. The Teacher’s Guide (English version at http://www.statcan.ca/english/kits/2001/pdf/Guide-e.pdf and French version at http://www.statcan.ca/francais/kits/2001/pdf/Guide-f.pdf) and eight Activities (English version at http://www.statcan.ca/english/kits/2001/activity.htm and French version at http://www.statcan.ca/francais/kits/2001/activity_f.htm) are appropriate for many subjects including English, Economics, Mathematics, Art, Social Studies, Geography, History, Family Studies, Theatre Arts, Science, Physical Education and ESL (English as a second language). There is a 2001 Census ABE/Literacy Kit for instructors working with adult learners, particularly in adult basic education (ABE) and English as a second language (ESL). There is material for Instructors and Learners.

2001 Census Results Teacher's Kit

Activities are available for elementary, intermediate and high schools, are classroom-ready and have been classroom-tested by professional educators. Minimal preparation time is required. Activities are grouped according to subject using the terminology used in the census. For example, Activities 1 to 3 deal with Population Counts, the first variable released for the 2001 Census. 2001 Census Results Teacher’s Kit activities are appropriate for English, Mathematics, Theatre Arts, Art, Social Sciences, Geography, History, Family Studies and Informatics. Suggested grade levels are indicated on each activity and all necessary tables, charts, graphs and data are included.

Lesson plans/data sets and other kits

These lessons help teachers bring applied statistical information in over 20 subject areas from Aboriginal studies to Science into the classroom. Each lesson has a standard format with all materials included.

Teacher's Guide to Data Discovery

Released in the Statistics Canada Daily on June 5 2007-, Teacher's Guide to Data Dicovery is a free online publication from Statistics Canada’s Education Outreach program.

This guide was developed by Mary Townsend, written from a teacher’s perspective in an easy- to- read style by Angela McCanny, a Census At School resource teacher, and edited by Elise Mennie. It supports both elementary and secondary educators in helping students develop basic statistical skills and provides specific instructions on: (a) finding interesting and grade-appropriate datasets; (b) choosing appropriate graphs for different kinds of data; © calculating basic statistical measures, with or without statistical software. The Guide provides simple information on some of the fundamentals of stats and is just what teachers who are participating in Census At School (or not) are looking for !

The Education page of the Statistical Society of Canada contains learning materials for K-12, postsecondary education and teachers. Some of the links there are to Statistics Canada, but others are to other sites of interest to teachers and students at all levels of education.
