The papers and presentations from the 2004 Joint Statistical Meetings Invited Session sponsored by IASE on "Training of Government Statisticians" are also a good source of information on official statistics.

National Statistical Service

Seminars

The National Statistical Service of the Republic of Armenia (NSS RA) conducts seminars for statistical information users (journalists, teachers, students, different institutions, business community, NGOs, individuals, etc.) with a purpose to inform users on official statistics mission, functions, organization, data collection, production and dissemination principles, methodological developments and statistical surveys, to teach them how to find necessary statistical information on the website, databases, statistical publications and press releases.

National Accounts of The Republic of Armenia, 1990-1997

The first complete publication on the System of National Accounts of Armenia, as well as on the models and indicators related to the System. The handbook presents in details the methodology used by National Statistical Service of Armenia. The handbook is intended for all types of users.

"What is Statistics" booklet (in English)

What Is Statistics? is a booklet written at the level that secondary school students can understand but it does not teach how to do data analysis or how to compute anything, so readers do not learn to do statistics or to read statistics. It is more a description of the goals of the Statistical Office, a transcription of the laws about what a Statistical Office is supposed to do. Once you go to the website, you can click on the various sections and download them as pdf files. The sections are Foreword, Description of Statistics, RA Law “On State Statistics” (where RA stands for Republic of Armenia, The National Statistical Service of RA, State Council on Statistics of the Republic of Armenia, State Statistical Work Program, The tasks set before the statistics, General Strategy of Statistics, The Statistical Information Users and the Relation with Them, Statistical Materials Published in 2000, and International Statistical Co-operation.

AUSTRALIA

Australian Bureau of Statistics

Education Services

Education Services is the unit within the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) dedicated to promoting statistics in Australia’s primary and secondary schools and assisting teachers and students to increase their level of statistical literacy.

The Education webpages maintained by Education Services on the ABS website offer a wide range of teacher and student resources including classroom activities, education projects, data and statistics, games and puzzles, newsletters and careers information.

Education Services initiated, and is responsible for, the Australian CensusAtSchool project which is the high profile online data collection and analysis project where school students complete a questionnaire about themselves and their interests, and then in the second phase can access and analyse the aggregated data.

Education Services has a nationwide schedule of attendance at workshops, conferences and seminars, and conducts regular mailouts to schools. Ongoing contacts are maintained with a range of education providers, curriculum authorities and educational publishers promoting the value and encouraging the use of statistics across the school spectrum.

National Statistical Training Institute

ABS Training

Through the National Statistical Training Institute (NSTI) the ABS offers a range of training courses for anyone wishing to develop their statistical skills. Programs are available for beginners or those at a more advanced level. ABS training includes courses on how to:

  • analyse data or conduct statistical analysis
  • use data to write reports or social commentary
  • design surveys or questionnaires
  • use statistics in decision making
  • ensure their own statistics are used appropriately.

This section consists of a range of fact sheets, information guides, video tutorials, presentations and online courses to help you:

  • find the statistics you’re looking for
  • analyse, interpret and evaluate statistical information
  • communicate statistical findings with tables and graphs

Client Services

The Client Services section of the ABS consists of two main sections:

The National Information Referral Service (NIRS) is a telephone service (Australia 1300 135 070) open to the general public during business hours where simple statistical queries can be answered, help can be given to navigate the ABS website or advice given on meeting more complex statistical needs.

The Information Consultancy Unit (ICU) provides Client Services consultancy services (email: client.services@abs.gov.au) that deal with the more complex queries that fall outside the extensive range of data provided free on the ABS website. The consultancy services provide expert advice on obtaining customised statistical data. Outputs such as tailored reports, customised demographic data or time series, utilising the range of ABS statistical resources can be produced on a fee-for-service basis.

AUSTRIA

Statistics Austria

Statistics Austria

At irregular intervals during the past few years, Statistics Austria has organized courses on National Accounts (”The European System of National Accounts and its Implementation in Austria” and “Maastricht/National Accounts”) open to anyone. The courses last 2½ days and cost Euro 654. They have also produced two textbooks in German: “Theory of Statistics” and “Statistical Technique”. They also provide presentations to interested groups of people (for example, pupils or students) and organise workshops for journalists. The website does not contain a special section for education of the public, but free downloads (PDF) of most of their publications are available online, and a booklet “Austria. Data. Figures. Facts” can be retrieved free of charge at Statistics Austria’s information service.

REPUBLIC OF BELARUS

The National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus

Official website

The official website of the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus (Belstat) provides comprehensive information on the methods of compilation and computing of statistical indicators as well as the methodologies for the organisation and conducting of state statistical surveys (available in Russian only). Key figures, news releases, the catalogue of statistical publications, and other useful information is available both in Russian and English.

Statistical journal

Starting from 2009, the National Statistical Committee of the Republic of Belarus publishes a new quarterly journal Statistics of Belarus. The journal is published in Russian, the contents however being available in English. The journal deals with the specific issues related to the methodologies and organisation of state statistical surveys. It provides methodological instructions for completing state statistical reports, calendar schedules for the submission of state statistical reports and issue of selected statistical publications, analytical materials on the main trends in the socio-economic development of the country, demographic situation and living standards, as well as statistical information both at the national and regional levels. The journal is intended to better inform the government, research community, business circles and general public on the organisation and performance of statistical activities in the country, its socio-economic development, and to generally increase the level of statistical literacy.

Liaison with the media

Communication with the mass media is carried out via the official press secretary.

BULGARIA

National Statistical Institute

Journal

National Statistical Institute issues bimonthly the Statistics Journal, a specialized scientific journal, dealing with theoretical and applied statistical matter. The journal has a seventy-four-year history. It contains information and comments about novelties in statistical theory and practice in the country and abroad. Special attention is given to the priority problems of the methodology and organization of actual statistical surveys and implementation of new information technologies. It also presents the experience of international organizations and other countries in methodology and organization of statistical surveys, as well as consultations on different topics from statistical practice. The editorial board encourages the issue of articles concerning the statistical education at professional high-schools and universities. The summaries of the articles in each issue are disseminated on the NSI website in English and in Bulgarian.

Other Activities

The National Statistical Institute (NSI) conducts seminars for journalists in the correct interpretation and explanation of statistical indicators. The NSI occasionally provides commentaries on the incorrect interpretation of statistical information in the mass-media.

In 2002, the NSI and the Bulgarian Statisticians had a “Summer School” dedicated to the problems of Demographic and Regional Statistics.

Statistics: Power from Data! - les Statistiques: le pouvoir des données!

Statistics: Power from Data! / les Statistiques: le pouvoir des données is a free electronic resource, in modular format, designed to help teachers and secondary students better understand statistics and to enhance their skills in using them. The 13 chapters contain examples, case studies and exercises to help readers apply what they learn to everyday situation.

E-STAT

E-STAT is a dynamic interactive teaching and learning tool for the education community. It offers an enormous warehouse of reliable and timely statistics about Canada and its ever-changing people. E-STAT also offers online mapping and graphing functions.

Function Modelling using Secondary Data from E-STAT

In the real world, graphs related to human population or socioeconomic statistics rarely approximate any mathematical functions other than linear functions. However, there are some occasions where the underlying conditions lead to trends that closely approximate quadratic, exponential, sinusoidal and logistic functions or combinations of these functions.

The 2006 Pre-Census Teacher’s Kit was developed for use in elementary, intermediate and secondary classes across the country. All activities are classroom-ready and have been classroom tested to meet curriculum requirements. The Teacher’s Guide and Trousse de l’enseignant Recensement de 2001 - Guide de l’enseignant and eight Activities are appropriate for many subjects including English, Economics, Mathematics, Art, Social Studies, Geography, History, Family Studies, Theatre Arts, Science, Physical Education and ESL (English as a second language). There is a 200 6 Census ABE/Literacy Kit for instructors working with adult learners, particularly in adult basic education (ABE) and English as a second language (ESL). There is material for Instructors and Learners.

2006 Census Results Teacher's Kit

This kit provides teachers with innovative classroom materials based on the results of the 2006 Census. Activities are classroom-ready and were developed by The Critical Thinking Consortium, a non-profit society which includes professional educators, academics, schools, faculties of education and educational organizations and associations.

The 2006 Census Results Teacher’s Kit activities are relevant to the following subjects: English, mathematics, social sciences, geography, history, family studies and technology. Suggested grade levels are intermediate and secondary (Grades 7 to 12) and all necessary materials and links to articles, photos, graphs and data are included.

Each activity follows the critical challenge approach and presents an engaging question or task. Learners are taught to become competent in reaching reasoned judgements as they locate, use, interpret and assess information.

Trousses de l'enseignant Ressources selon la matière scolaire

As part of Statistics Canada’s Learning resources site over 150 lesson plans at various grade levels elementary (1-6), intermediate (7-8) and secondary (9-12) have been developed by teachers for teachers. These lessons help teachers bring applied statistical information in over 20 subject areas from Aboriginal studies to Science into the classroom. Each lesson has a standard format with all materials included.

Senior students can analyse these sets of unaggregated survey data using spreadsheet or data analysis software. There are five microdata sets taken from past censuses, a longitudinal survey on youth, a survey on health behaviours of school -aged children.

The Workshops web page describe the numerous workshops that run from 1 day to 5 days. The workshops most relevant to statistical literacy are Introduction to Basic Statistics, Introduction to Basic Sampling, Making Sense of Survey Data, Statistics for Business Planning, Survey Sampling & Questionnaire Design, Surveys from Start to Finish, and Turning Statistics Into Stories. The website describing programs contains detail all of the training courses (including statistics and communications skills) available to Statistics Canada employees.

The Statistics Canada Training Institute Catalogue presents a compendium of corporate flagship courses and training courses, which mark Statistics Canada as a centre of expertise in the full range of activities required to make a statistical agency function.

Other activities through the Education Outreach Program

Statistics Canada has established an Education Outreach Program that focuses on bringing pertinent information and technology into classrooms in order to improve the statistical literacy of and to help develop data management skills in young Canadians. This is done through a variety of initiatives including: teacher workshops and summer institutes [some conducted by Statistics Canada employees and some conducted by in-service expert teachers (called teacher champions), secondary school student workshops, having a network of regional educational representatives who are Statistics Canada employees, providing training for pre-service teachers, creating partnerships and alliances with other organizations, newsletters, publishing a yearly newspaper distributed to over 50,000 School Boards (that is, local education authorities) called “Learning with Canadian Information”, having Statistics Canada employees serve in advisory capacity when curricula are drafted, and allowing employees to provide their expertise to local schools during their regular work hours either assisting in classrooms or as speakers]. Also, Statistics Canada has developed a partnership with textbook publishers that ensures the provision of free statistical data for application in textbooks.
