Estadistica Descritiva contains games, a dictionary of statistcs, cartoons, problems and exercises and interactive activities. All the problems are on descriptive statistics (link given by Maria Manuel da Silva Nascimento)

ALEA contains numerous games, statistics challenging quizzes for the young and the old, interesting links (in Portuguese and English), statistics lessons, national and international statistics questions and information for kids, and many other statitical literacy interesting material. The INE (Instituto Nacional de Estatistica) de Portugal runs it. ALEA won the first Best Cooperative Project Award in Statistical Literacy, granted by the ISLP in 2007.

Literacia Estatística nas notícias contains selected news pieces and magazine articles with engaging statistical information in graphs and textual information. Questions about the statistical content of the article and the graph are written for students.

CensusVivo is a web page for the CensusVivo project lead by Bruno Sousa. It does not contain materials or activities or data yet, but it will soon. If anybody is interested, they can contact Bruno Sousa.

Prémios “Estatístico Júnior 2007” of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Estatística. This is for students in all years of school, ensino básico e secundário.

Dedicado ao Ensino e Aprendizagem da Estatística O boletim da SPE do Outono 2006, no artigo De pequeninos é que se “torcem”... os números!... explica como ensinar alunos com idades entre os 6 e os 9 anos, a organizar dados em tabelas, fazer representações gráficas – diagramas circulares, gráficos de caule-e-folhas, diagramas de extremos e quartis – e ainda a calcular algumas características amostrais.

The article “Literacia Estatística” de João Branco e Maria Eugénia Graça Martins}} states that, in the case of statistical literacy what is sought is not to create people specialized in Statistics, but to estimulate in people the capacity to understand the elementary processes of data gathering and analysis, the understanding of what is behind an statistical argument and the notion of what it means to be random. (...) Statistical Literacy, at the level of any resident of any country, must allow each of us to interpret easily the problems that are presented to us by the media and whose solution depends on statistical knowledge. Interpreting tables and graphics, understanding arguments on salaries and wages, price indices, fluctuations in the stock market, unemployment rates, disease evolution, political polls, and many other similar problems that are presented to us as statistical informations is a requirement for statistical literacy. This article is very good to compare the concepts of quantitative literacy, statistical literacy and other similar concepts that are usually brought up when discussing the numeracy of citizens.

This article comparing the statistics curriculum of Portugal, England and the United States by João Pedro da Ponte of the Centro de Investigação em Educação e Departamento de Educação da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa e Helena Fonseca do Centro de Investigação em Educação e Departamento de Educação da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa is a very nice documentary of the differences and similarities between the curriculumm “on paper” and “in practice”. The authors do not focus so much in the reality of implementation of the curriculum in the classes (aulas), as on the principles and paper documents, but their comparisons are very helpful to see the directions taken at a programatic level in these three countries.

The Portuguese School Curriculum for basic (cycles 1, 2, and 3) include basic training in statistical literacy. If you click on the blue link “Currículo Nacional do Ensino Básico - Competências Essenciais” you will see the curriculum for Basic education translated to English, too. At the secondary level (years 11 and 12), the curriculum only requires the study of probability and combinatorial counting methods. Data analysis does not appear in the requirements for secondary education. So it is no harm that it does not appear in English.

Readjustment to the Mathematics Program in Basic --Elementary + Middle School -- Education . Portugal is readjusting its program of Basic Education in the area of Mathematics, to make it more coordinated with the School Curriculum. The Document is a pdf file.
