Statistics Canada has established an Education Outreach Program that focuses on bringing pertinent information and technology into classrooms in order to improve the statistical literacy of and to help develop data management skills in young Canadians. This is done through a variety of initiatives including: teacher workshops and summer institutes [some conducted by Statistics Canada employees and some conducted by in-service expert teachers (called teacher champions), secondary school student workshops, having a network of five regional educational representatives who are Statistics Canada employees, providing training for pre-service teachers, creating partnerships and alliances with other organizations, newsletters, publishing a yearly newspaper distributed to over 50,000 School Boards (that is, local education authorities) called “Learning with Canadian Information”, having Statistics Canada employees serve in advisory capacity when curricula are drafted, and allowing employees to provide their expertise to local schools during their regular work hours either assisting in classrooms or as speakers]. Also, Statistics Canada has developed a partnership with textbook publishers that ensures the provision of free statistical data for application in textbooks.
For more information on any of the above or the Education Outreach Program contact Mary Townsend, Coordinator, Education Outreach at mary.townsend@statcan.ca.

Annually, since 1986, the Statistical Project Competition for Secondary School Students is held with the aim of promoting students’ interest in statistics, which in turn helps encourage them to study and understand the proper use of statistics and statistical methods. Many of the Society’s members actively assist in the organization and adjudication of the competition.
