R & C Silvester Wetlands - Tiritiri Matangi

My grandfather noticed that Tiritiri Matangi, a former cattle farm in the Waitemata Harbour, off Whangaparaoa, had water problems. All streams were seasonal, and in the event of rain the water would scour down the hills and carry all the collected leaf matter off the cliff and into the sea.

Ralph (and Conny) Silvester put forward the money to have two dams built in gullies down the far end of the island. These images are from the island before the dam was built. Perhaps some of the markings in the soil are from the construction work. There is a zig zag path from the dam to the north of the second dam. The path to the west has less traffic now as it is full of water.
