Doctoral Candidate - Doctor of Philosophy

Biography

Natalia joined the Department of Statistics as a PhD student in October 2018, under the supervision of Dr Nichola Shackleton, Dr Barry Milne and Professor Thomas Lumley. She previously completed a BA with a double major in statistics and psychology, a BA(Hons) in statistics (first class), and a Master’s in Public Policy (first class). She is particularly interested in the intersection of official statistics and public policy. Her Master’s research project explored how different ways of using the ethnicity information captured by Statistics New Zealand as part of the Integrated Data Infrastructure influence the narratives around ethnic inequalities, and the potential impact this has on policy.

Research | Current

Natalia’s PhD will involve examining different methods of combining the socioeconomic information of individuals to produce measures for households and parental units. In particular, it will involve evaluating the implications of these methods for estimating inequalities in adult (using household SES) and child (using household and parental SES) outcomes. Especial attention will be paid to the validity and usefulness of these methods across different ages, ethnic groups and family positions.
