A SUMMARY OF THE
TERMS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND ACADEMIC STAFF
STANDARD EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT
(TENURABLE APPOINTMENTS)
All University tenurable appointments are governed by the provisions of
the University of Auckland Academic Staff Standard Employment Contract,
plus any special conditions which might be issued for specific
appointments. The information that follows is a summary of the main points
of the Standard Employment Contract. Copies of the complete document are
available on request.
- RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic staff report to the Vice-Chancellor through the Dean of their
Faculty and Head of Department, School or Centre, as the case may
be.
- DUTIES
Staff are required to:
- engage in research and publication within their field of appointment
- conduct research-informed teaching in accordance with an agreed
teaching programme
- contribute to the administration of the department and participate in
and support the University's wider administrative and ceremonial
functions.
- TERMS OF APPOINTMENT
Appointments are for an initial term of four years and may be continued
thereafter by agreement.
- TERMINATION
- Employees are expected to give six months written notice of
termination.
- The University may terminate employment instantly in the case of
serious misconduct or criminal offences, or with one month's notice for
incompetence or incapacity. Any such action will be in accordance with
established Disciplinary Guidelines.
- REDUNDANCY
In the event of redundancy, an agreement covering redeployment or
compensation exists.
- STAFF DEVELOPMENT
Induction courses for new staff and staff development programmes will be
provided.
- PERFORMANCE REVIEW
An employee's performance will be reviewed at least on an annual basis.
- REMUNERATION
Salaries are paid fortnightly by direct bank credit.
- LEAVE
- Research and Study Leave may be granted in accordance with the policies
of the University.
- Leave of absence to attend conferences may be provided
- Annual Leave, Sick Leave, Parental and other leave will be granted
according to established policies.
- REFUND OF APPOINTMENT EXPENSES
Staff who leave the University within three years of their appointment will
be required to refund a pro-rata portion of their appointment expenses.
- OUTSIDE EMPLOYMENT
Outside activities (provided they are not in competition with the
University's activities) may be undertaken in accordance with the
University's policies.
- DISPUTES & GRIEVANCES
The processes for resolving disputes and personal grievances will be as
defined in the Employment Contracts Act 1991.
- DISCIPLINARY GUIDELINES
Written Disciplinary Guidelines exist for any instances of disciplinary
action that may be invoked.
- SUPERANNUATION
All staff are eligible to join the New Zealand Universities Superannuation
Scheme. The scheme provides for staff to contribute any percentage of their
salary which is subsidised by the University up to a maximum of 5% net of
tax. Additional lump sum contributions can be made. Payment (tax free) is
upon retirement, depending upon length of service. An information booklet
is available on request.
The following clauses, while not an integral part of the University of
Auckland Academic Staff Standard Employment Contract, constitute
University policy, and apply to all appointments.
- RESERVATIONS
The University reserves the right to invite specific individuals to apply
for vacant positions.
- Although an applicant may be in correspondence with other members of
the University concerning the appointment, it should be noted that only
statements over the name of the Vice-Chancellor or the Registrar commit or
bind the University. Any queries on Conditions should be addressed to the
Registrar.
- TRAVEL ALLOWANCES
Fares and other removal expenses within the stated limits are allowed to
newly appointed staff from their place of residence at the time the
appointment is made. Travel awards from other sources will be taken into
account.
Note:
Conditions of Appointment may be amended by awards and agreements
negotiated from time to time under the Employment Contracts Act.
