ERRATA & MINOR IMPROVEMENTS

Chapter 3

p 110, Fig 3.1.8, caption (b) : "flatter lines" should read "flatter line"

Chapter 4

p 173, last paragraph: We have changed stories part way through. We did a calculation relating to barriermethods, talked about that probability as if it related to IUDs and then spent the rest of the story discussingIUDs.

Chapter 5

p 209, Example 5.3.3. Not really an error but a footnote that Minitab 12 will not handle this calculation buttyping =binomdist(89,151,0.5,true) in Excel, cf. Fig 5.3.2 p207, would be useful

Chapter 6

P 232, Fig 6.1.1, y-axis labels on (c ) and (d) are one tick too high -- (a) and (b) are correct.

Units in both figure and caption for Fig 6.1.1 should be "g/day" and not "mg/day"

The units should be changed in the same way in the text on pp 232-233 (it may surface in other places as well)

Chapter 7

P 287, Fig 7.2.5, numbers on x-axis in (b) and (c) are for sum -- change for average

Chapter 9

p 380, caption to Fig 9.3.1: reference should be to Table 9.3.1 (not 9.1.1)

pp 381, 389, Definitions of the p-value should say "at least as far away from the hypothesized value as our data estimate" instead of "further away". The distinction doesn't affect P-values based on continuous distributions such as the Normal and Student's t, but is very important for exact (rather than large sample) methods based on discrete distributions such as the Binomial. The only time where we actually do the latter is the sign test (Section 10.1.3 starting on page 423) where the example does in fact use the "at least as far" idea.

Chapter 10

p 437, 2nd line from bottom, "scan only" should read "map only"

p 431, "homosexual" on line 3 should read "heterosexual"

Chapter 12

p 538, "outliers in X" paragraph – Fig 12.4.13 plots should be labelled as Y vs X plots and in the 1st line of the para change "an X-value that shows up" to"an X-value that would show up"

page 541, property (ii) of r, at the end of the comment about negative values of r:  "Y gets smaller as X gets smaller" , should be:  "Y gets smaller as X gets larger".
