Gilberte Schuyten is Professor and Head of the Department of Data Analysis at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences at Ghent University and President of IASE. She teaches data analysis and empirical research methods at the Faculty. She earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Ghent University (1971) on a study of the diffraction of light by supersonic waves.
As a young researcher she started ‘new math’ experiments in the late sixties and early seventies at the experimental school attached to the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences. In the seventies and eighties her research interests centred on technology (calculators and computers) and the school curriculum. She introduced Logo in Belgium and organized several teacher training courses for Flemish teachers. Also at the European level she chaired several summer universities for the European Community about Introducing New Information Technologies at school. She has been active at ICMI-Belgium and IFIP (active member of WG1 Computers at elementary schools and WG5 Computers at secondary schools) and organized international conferences for IFIP WG1 and Eurologo. She got several projects of the Flemish government aimed at using ICT in statistics courses at university level.
Since presenting a paper at ICOTS in Dunedin (1990), she has been involved with IASE and ISI. She presented several papers dealing with empirical research results during IASE and ISI meetings. Her primary interest is in statistics learning of students in the social sciences focusing on the impact of student cognitive and affective characteristics and on the impact of electronic devices. She participated with a research report at the IASE Round Table at Granada in 96, organized sessions at ICOTS5 (1998) and several ISI meetings, was topic convenor at ICOTS6 (2002), program chair of IASE at ISI-Berlin (2003), vice-president of IASE (1999-2001 and 2001-2003) and president-elect (2003-2005). She was editor of the IASE Matters insert of Teaching Statistics from 1999-2005. She serves as member of the editorial board of SERJ and is reviewer for JSE, JRME and Education and Information Technologies.
She has published in Physica, Educational and Psychological Measurement, Education and Information Technologies, Education & Computing, Addictive Behaviors, The Lancet, International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, Scientia Paedagogica Experimentalis and Proceedings of several ICOTS and ISI-meetings.
