About Us

The Department of Statistics was founded in 1994, and currently is the largest Statistics department in New Zealand, with a total of 19 full-time staff and numerous part-time staff who collectively teach more than 4300 students spread over two campuses and four faculties.

The Department teaches a full range of graduate and undergraduate courses, ranging from our first-year course which is offered to more than 2800 students per year, to our postgraduate program with an enrolment of over 40.

We provide an active and well resourced research environment, with strong research groups in the following areas

The Department operates a statistical consulting service, which provides expert statistical advice on a fee-for-service basis to both internal and external clients.

Our Aspirations

We want to be a Department
  • that produces high quality research on problems of practical importance,
  • that teaches leading-edge courses that will be useful to students in their coursework and research whatever their disciplines and in their lives and work after University regardless of the level at which they stop studying Statistics,
  • that is innovative in its pedagogy,
  • that has strong links with all parts of the University heavily involved in collecting and analysing data,
  • in which all lecturing staff have links with at least one other discipline and publish their collaborative research,
  • in which all lecturing staff do some applied consulting.
